What The Heck Is That Black Line Around My Carpet?

Short and sweet, it is called a “filtration line”, it occurs after a long period of time and is the result of air flowing through your carpet (in effect using it as an air filter, kind of like in your car). Where does it come from? Anything and everything is the real answer, soot from burning candles, smoking and airborne smoke and oil from cooking all contribute to the problem. But, But I vacuum all of the time, and most of us do, but the fact is most vacuums today do not reach right up to the wall, so unless you are using a crevice tool, your vacuum has no effect at all. This soil tends to really bond with your carpet and over time can look quite ugly. We find it not only along the baseboard, but under doors, stair edges and sometimes even under the skirts of furniture!

What can I do… obviously, vacuum as good and aggressively as you can, keep indoor air clean, using hepa filters, also, maintain your air ducts and change your furnace filters regularly.

Did you know, you can use Alka-Seltzer to:

Clean a toilet – just drop in 2 tablets, wait 20 minutes, then brush and flush.
Clean a vase – just drop in 2 tablets, fill with water, let sit and it should remove any stains.
Polish Jewelry – drop 2 tablets in a glass of water and immerse the jewelry for 2 minutes.
Clean a thermos or carafe – use 4 tablets, fill with water and let sit for an hour or more.
Unclog a drain - drop in 3 tablets followed by a cup of white vinegar, wait then flush with hot water.
Brighten laundry – soak white items in 1 gal. of warm water with 2 tablets for 20-30 minutes.
